Heather Kanazawa’s paintings begin outdoors, in moments of looking closely. A band of cool blue cutting through a dense forest, the soft disturbance of water across a spring pond—these sharp, fleeting contrasts in nature linger with her long after the scene has passed. They become part of an internal archive, carefully held and revisited through her studio practice.

Rather than recreating landscapes as they appear, Heather works from how they are remembered. For her, memory exists in pieces—colors, sensations, shifts of light—more than in complete narratives. Abstraction becomes the language that best mirrors this experience, allowing her to translate fragments of place into layered compositions that feel both intimate and open-ended. Each painting acts as a quiet bridge between what was seen, what was felt, and what remains.

Heather earned her BFA in 2007 and her MA in Art Education in 2011 from Edinboro University. Her work has been exhibited recently at Glass Growers Gallery in Erie, Pennsylvania; Crary Art Gallery in Warren, Pennsylvania; and the Wellsville Creative Arts Center in Wellsville, New York. She currently works from her studios in Edinboro and New Castle, Pennsylvania, continuing to build a body of work shaped by observation, memory, and the subtle poetry of the natural world.
