Jason Shorr
Jason Shorr’s work moves easily between art, science, and storytelling—three threads that have shaped his career as an artist, gallery owner, and educator. Originally from Pittsburgh and now based in Zelienople, he has spent years building a practice that is as curious as it is visually exuberant, grounded in both careful observation and imaginative play.
His paintings and prints have been exhibited at venues including the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, the Whitaker Center for Science and Art in Harrisburg, BoxHeart Gallery, Moxie DaDa Gallery in Pittsburgh, and JMS Gallery in Philadelphia, most recently appearing in Galactic Funk at CURIO Art Gallery & Studio. A long-term collection of his work is housed at the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine in Pittsburgh, with additional pieces held by institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Eaton Corporation.
For much of his career, Jason drew inspiration from medical and scientific imagery, weaving elements of scientific illustration and human anatomy together with personal and mythological narratives. That foundation of precision and symbolism remains, but his most recent body of work turns toward memory—specifically the bright, chaotic landscape of childhood. Saturday morning cartoons, early video game characters, space villains, robots, heroes, and monsters collide in layered, neo-Pop compositions that feel both playful and strangely epic.
With Galactic Funk, Shorr celebrates and glamorizes the sensory rush of growing up in the 1970s and ’80s. Bubble gum becomes a symbol of youth itself—sweet, fleeting, and intense—while figures ranging from Godzilla to soap opera star Morgan Fairchild coexist in the same painted universe. Through these unlikely pairings, he explores nostalgia, imagination, and the thin line between good and evil. The result is work that invites viewers to revisit their own early obsessions and daydreams, and to remember a time when the world felt larger, stranger, and full of limitless possibility.
