Joshua Hogan paints from the space where logic loosens its grip and intuition takes over. His forms drift, collide, and overlap like fragments pulled from a dream—echoing the Surrealists’ belief that the unconscious holds its own kind of truth. Within these shifting networks of shape and color are quiet allegories for the relationships he has lived, witnessed, and imagined. For Hogan, painting is an act of release: setting aside fixed memories in order to make room for new ways of seeing. It is how he gives form to the stories running through his mind, stories that continually shape and reshape his sense of self.

Born in Pittsburgh, Joshua earned his BA from Carlow College (now Carlow University), where a pivotal experience helped define his visual language. While a student, he took part in the Semester at Sea program, traveling to fifteen countries including Egypt, Vietnam, Turkey, and Morocco. Moving through unfamiliar cultures and encounters left a lasting imprint, one that still surfaces in the fluid, interconnected shapes that populate his work—a visual metaphor for human interaction in all its complexity.

Beyond the studio, Hogan has played a central role in Pittsburgh’s contemporary art community. Together with his wife, Nicole Capozzi, he owns and directs BoxHeart Gallery in Bloomfield. For more than twenty-five years, the gallery has been a vital platform for emerging and established artists alike, and remains one of the region’s most influential spaces for contemporary art.
