Josh Mitchel

Josh Mitchel is a Pittsburgh-based artist and educator whose work centers on the quiet and not-so-quiet conflicts that shape the human mind. Drawn to Freud’s theory of the ego and the id, he paints the tension between rational thought and impulse—the constant negotiation between what we want to do and what we believe we should do. Though his work is partly autobiographical, the figures he creates are meant to stand in for anyone, reflecting a struggle he sees as universal.

Josh approaches painting much like a filmmaker approaches a scene. Every formal decision—composition, lighting, scale, and gesture—supports the emotional and psychological tone of the work. The human body is central to his practice. Figures press close to the picture plane, confronting the viewer directly, their forms fractured, repeated, or slightly unsettled, yet still grounded in anatomical truth. Aggressive mark-making, sweeping diagonals, and sharp contrasts heighten the sense of drama, giving each painting the feeling of a suspended moment within a larger, unseen narrative.

In his recent work, Josh has pushed this tension further by breaking the figure apart and reassembling it through repetition and layered movement. Overlapping forms, visual “stutters,” exposed revisions, and surface history become metaphors for inner unrest. Multiple limbs, distorted space, and figures partially concealed in fabric suggest vulnerability as much as conflict. These disruptions are not only formal choices, but emotional ones—an attempt to give shape to anxiety, contradiction, and empathy.

Through this uneasy balance of structure and chaos, control and impulse, Josh Mitchel creates paintings that do not resolve their conflicts, but inhabit them—offering viewers a mirror to the fractured, complicated experience of being human.
