Mychal Vens
Mychal Vens is a figurative ceramic artist from Northeast Ohio whose work explores identity, belief, and the tension between vulnerability and self-definition. He earned his BFA from Youngstown State University in 2024 and is currently an incoming MFA candidate at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.
Working with traditional hand-building techniques, Mychal creates sculptural figures that draw from both sacred historical imagery and contemporary experience. Veiled and adorned forms suggest ritual, protection, and spiritual reverence, while exposed bodies speak to defiance and emotional openness. By placing modesty beside nudity and tradition beside modern narrative, his work challenges fixed ideas of how identity should be seen or understood—particularly within frameworks shaped by religion and cultural expectation.
Many of his figures resist clear definitions of gender or ethnicity. Their intentionally ambiguous faces reject categorization, allowing viewers to project their own interpretations and form a personal connection with the work.
Mychal has exhibited regionally and nationally, including at Currents during the 57th annual NCECA conference, and regularly presents lectures, demonstrations, and workshops on figurative ceramic techniques. Through his work, he invites reflection on identity as something fluid and evolving—shaped by resilience, contradiction, and the ongoing search for authenticity.
