Rachael J. Burke approaches painting as an act of exploration, allowing intuition rather than predetermined plans to guide each work. While her paintings often begin with recognizable subjects, they quickly move beyond direct representation, capturing the shifting sensations, emotions, and perceptions that exist beneath the surface of everyday experience. The result is work that feels simultaneously grounded and elusive, balancing observation with abstraction.

For Burke, the process of painting is inseparable from the meaning of the finished work. Layers of oil paint, visible revisions, and expressive mark-making remain present on the surface, revealing the path each painting has taken to become itself. Rather than seeking permanence or certainty, her work embraces change, imperfection, and continual transformation. Through this approach, Burke explores the shared emotional realities that connect memory, perception, and the passage of time.

Born in Pottstown, Burke earned her BFA from Western Kentucky University and her MFA in Painting from Miami University. A longtime Professor of Art at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, she has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, including at the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Erie Art Museum. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections.
