Scott Hunter
Scott’s paintings live in the space where tradition and imagination meet. Grounded in careful observation and drawing from life, his work is equally shaped by intuition—by the quiet decisions of arranging images, textures, colors, and forms until something emotionally resonant begins to emerge.
He moves fluidly between representation and abstraction, guided by an ongoing tension between figuration and his deep admiration for abstract expressionism. From this push and pull have grown two distinct bodies of work. Both, in their own way, suggest a sense of place or the trace of a memory, and both are constructed to carry an emotional presence that lingers beyond what is immediately seen.
In his abstract paintings, Scott often works on a large scale, allowing broad fields of vibrant color to overlap and interact across the surface. These layered passages activate the picture plane, creating compositions that feel immersive and quietly charged with movement and depth.
Scott studied painting and art history at Boston University, graduating in 1993 after a rigorous, classically structured education centered on intensive studio practice and drawing from life. His artistic path has also included work in theatrical set design, illustration, commissioned portraiture, and wall murals—experiences that continue to inform his sense of space, narrative, and visual balance.
