Paul Roden
Paul Roden creates vibrant, intricately layered works that reflect the experience of living in an increasingly image-saturated world. Drawing from advertising, popular culture, printmaking, and personal observation, he assembles compositions that are immediately engaging yet reward sustained attention. Bold graphic elements attract the eye, while hidden references, visual detours, and unexpected connections gradually reveal themselves over time.
At the heart of Roden's work is an ongoing curiosity about how we process information and construct meaning from the countless images that surround us each day. His paintings function as visual diaries, capturing shifting interests, observations, and questions as they emerge. While his earlier work often carried a solitary, observational quality, recent pieces reveal a growing fascination with contemporary culture and the complex ways we interact with one another.
Originally working exclusively as a woodcut printmaker, Roden expanded into painting and additional media in 2017, embracing new challenges and opportunities for experimentation. Born in Nashville and now based in Pittsburgh, he earned his MFA from the University of South Dakota. His multidisciplinary practice continues to evolve through projects that encourage growth, curiosity, and discovery.
